危地馬拉是古代印第安人瑪雅文化中心之一。１５２４年淪為西班牙殖民地。１５２７年西班牙在危設置都督府，管轄除巴拿馬以外的中美洲地區。１８２１年９月１５日擺脫西班牙殖民統治，宣佈獨立。１８２２—１８２３年成為墨西哥帝國的一部分。１８２３年加入中美洲聯邦。１８３８年聯邦解體後，於１８３９年再次成為獨立國。１８４７年３月２１日危地馬拉宣佈建立共和國。
