１６世纪以前，印第安人阿拉瓦克族和加勒比族在此居住。１５１８年西班牙人登岛。１０多年后葡萄牙人入侵。１６２４年英国将该岛划分为其殖民地。１６２７年英国设总督管辖，并从西非贩来大批黑奴开闢种植园。１８３４年英国被迫宣佈废除奴隶制。１９５８年加入西印度联邦（该联邦於１９６２年５月解散）。１９６１年１０月实行内部自治。１９６６年１１月３０日宣佈独立，成为英联邦成员国。
